A weekend in Trentino
This past weekend an old high school friend, Erin, came to visit. He is actually in Germany for the World Cup, but decided to check out my "hood" for two days. It was nice to speak English, but I had to do a lot of back and forth between English and Italian and I realized that I didn't make much sense in either language! This past weekend was the perfect time to visit because we didn't have homework and the weather was nice. On Saturday I went to Verona to pick him up and we spent the afternoon exploring the city. We visited the Arean and another ancient Roman theater. We had a great vegetarian lunch with my friends Nicola and Francesca and a cocktail on the Adige river. Not bad! Then we headed for the hills...well, the mountains. After the nickle tour of Rovereto we ate and went out for some drinks. We met up with the artists that are here in residency for a conference that we are organizing this weekend about complexity and the relationship between art and science. Here is the blog of the project they are working on: http://art_con_fusion.blog.tiscali.it
Anyways, we heard there was a party in the mountains and so we grabbed Rovereto's version of the "drunk bus" up the mountain. Going up a mountain with a driver in a hurry is serious busy. We're talking up up and away via zig-zag mania. Unfortunately, I don't do so well with that, but I survived. However, one of the artists took it worse than I did. Yes, he started throwing up on the bus. Not fun for anyone. Poor guy. Luckily it wasn't like those Saturday Night LIve episodes where when one person starts projectile vomiting, everyone starts. I was close those. We collectively resisted the chain reaction! Once on the mountain, no one is quite sure exactly where, at about 1:30 a.m. it felt a bit like a post-modern woodstock with lots of drunk and messed up teenagers wandering the fields and different djs playing. We stayed long enough to recover from the trip up to go back down. Luckily going down is much easier than coming up the mountain.
After the Saturday adventures we slept late. In the afternoon we went to Lake Garda. There was a ton of wind and a ton of windsurfers cruising quite fast. We explored the towns of Torbole and Riva del Garda. On the way back to Rovereto we took a detour to check the Castle of Avio. Unfortunately we couldn't get instead, but we will definitely go back, with hiking shoes.
So, after many months, we were finally able to discover some of the sights just 20 minutes from and I must say that it is gorgeous here. Time is ticking away, so if you want to visit you better come soon! Enjoy the beginning of summer everyone!
